On August 15, 1871, New Jersey appointed Fish Wardens in each county adjoining the Delaware River to enforce Fishing Regulations. Fish Wardens were paid $100 per year salary. In 1884 Fish Wardens were empowered to enforce game laws enacting them as NJ Fish & Game Wardens. In 1896 a position as Deputy Game Warden was created. This position was unpaid as it is today and at its height, it numbered in the hundreds.
